CONDITIONS UPDATE
Conditions Update: 03/11/2020
Hut Keeper Matt has just returned from his last hitch up at Pear Lake, and he reports that the latest storm brought 2 inches of new snow. Despite the new snow, coverage remains the same. Visitors should expect to walk a substantial portion from the Wolverton parking lot to the Hump. Matt also reports that there is now a "dust on icy crust situation" happening. Please use caution while traveling and be aware that the new dusting of snow might be covering up obstacles such as rocks, trees, and ice.
Remember: Please keep an eye on weather forecasts and make the best decision for your group and your group's skill level. When considering any adventure, plan for the safety of the least experienced person in your group.
Conditions Update: 02/26/2020
Hut Keeper Analisa reports that the 6 inches of new snow we received this last weekend really improved conditions above 9000 ft. ️Analisa reports that the north-facing slopes still have "powder-like snow" and that conditions on the south-facing slopes range from corn-like snow to crust.
The conditions from the Wolverton parking lot to the Hump, unfortunately, have not improved. We encourage everyone to GET AN EARLY START – many guests have been surprised by how long it takes them to get to the Hut. Additionally, guests should be prepared to hike on the corridor between the Hump and the parking lot (both ways).
The new snow is melting quickly, BUT we are crossing our fingers that the upcoming weather system approaching our area this weekend will yield some more snow! ️
Conditions Update: 02/19/2020
Hut Keeper Analisa reports that there is a lot of melt happening around the Hut. Analisa has observed that the North facing slopes have a consistent breakable crust and the South facing slopes are experiencing anything from corn-like snow to bare surfaces from accelerated melt in the afternoons. Additionally, Analisa reports that conditions are very icy in the mornings and very melty in the afternoons.
As you are skiing you can expect to see anywhere from 2 inches to 3 feet of snow on South facing slopes and anywhere from 3 feet to 4.5 feet on North facing slopes.
From the Wolverton parking lot to the Hump it is very patchy. Guests are reporting that they are having difficulty getting up the Hump. Some people are booting it up and others are using ski crampons.
Please be cautious of following ski tracks! There are many ski tracks from Wolverton to the Hut. We highly recommend that you are referencing your maps and staying on the winter route at all times. REMEMBER, the Watchtower Route is CLOSED.
Lastly, even though we have had a lack of snow, that does not mean that avalanche conditions are not present. There is always a risk of avalanche. Please be careful and make the best decisions for your group. When in doubt, don't go out!
Conditions Update: 02/12/2020
Unfortunately, conditions have not improved much over the last week. Hut Keeper Matt reported that he could ski all the way from the parking lot to the Hump; however, there were some bare patches to walk through or around. Matt also reports, that there is mostly solid coverage from the Hump to the Pear Lake Winter Hut but to use caution, as it is mostly icy or crusty.
Around the Hut, there are occasional coverage issues to be cautious of but Matt has reported that there is some very sugary snow to be found in a few places! Be sure to get the details from Matt and/or Analisa when you are there.
Did you know that Pear Lake Winter Hut is operated by the Sequoia Parks Conservancy? The Sequoia Parks Conservancy is the official non-profit partner to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. We work closely with the park to fund and enable projects and programs that provide access to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Pear Lake Winter Hut is a great example of this great mission! Through our collaborative work, we are able to provide access to the beautiful winter wilderness of the parks, and thanks to YOU we are able to keep Pear Lake Winter Hut open for current and future generations! ️
Now everyone, PLEASE do a few snow dances this week because I think we can all agree that we need a few good storms to head our way!
Conditions Update: 02/05/2020
Matt and Analisa have reported that there is 90% snow coverage from the Wolverton parking lot to the Panther Gap Junction (bottom of Heart Attack Hill). They also report that conditions are very icy and to expect to hike in some sections.
Analisa reported that all aspects around the Hut are wind affected with an icy crust, even the North facing slopes. Additionally, there is an average of 4' of snow at the Hut itself.
As you prepare to travel to the Hut and experience the Winter Wilderness of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks please remember:

For your own safety, you are required to fill out a free wilderness permit at the Giant Forest Museum (self-service kiosk open 24-hours) so that your travel plans are submitted to the National Park Service.
Conditions Update: 1/29/2020
Hut Keeper Matt reports that there is spotty/icy coverage from Wolverton parking lot to the Hump - you may have to hike. Snow on the north-facing slopes is soft and makes for great skiing! ❄️🙌 REMINDER! We still have plenty of spaces available for our AIARE Avalanche Rescue and Level 1 courses. Happy New Year! Here is the latest condition update from Hut Keeper Analisa:
Please be careful! Conditions are very icy, particularly the Hump. There is a solid snowshoe/ski track from the parking lot to the Hut with 100% coverage. There is currently 4 feet 7 inches of snow at the Hut.

Matt and Analisa have also reported a few small slides at various aspects near the base of Winter Alta. Please use caution while traveling. You are responsible for your own safety and avalanche knowledge.
REMEMBER to follow the WINTER ROUTE to Pear Lake, not the summer route. Additionally, the Watchtower Route is CLOSED due to hazardous winter conditions. You can find a map of the winter route at Foothills Visitor Center or Giant Forest Museum.

On December 25, Hut Keepers Matt and Analisa reported that 1.5 feet of fresh snow fell during this last storm bringing the snow total at the Hut to 5.5 feet. There is an estimated 4 feet at the trailhead at Wolverton parking lot. Guests can ski from the parking lot to the Hut.
Conditions Update 12/18/2019
Hut Keeper Matt has reported there is still 4 feet of snow at the Hut and full coverage from the Hut to the Wolverton parking lot, but conditions are fairly icy along the entire route.

SAFETY INFORMATION
You are responsible for your safety.
Natural areas present hazards. Cold temperatures, icy or uneven ground, wild animals, biting insects, and changing weather conditions all pose dangers. Rocks roll, trees topple, and limbs drop without warning. People create other hazards with campfires, traffic, snowplay, and poor decisions.
Understanding and preparing for the risks is a critical part of every trip to a National Park, visit www.nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/safety to learn more.
WILDERNESS PERMITS
Wilderness permits are required year-round for all overnight trips in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks' wilderness including the Pear Lake Winter Hut. For your own safety, you are required to fill out a free wilderness permit at the Giant Forest Museum (self-service kiosk open 24-hours) so that your travel plans are submitted to the National Park Service.
SAFETY STATEMENT & AVALANCHE RISK
The trip to the hut is for experienced backcountry skiers and snowshoers only. It should not be attempted by beginner skiers or snowshoers. The trail is steep and includes a 2,000 foot elevation gain in six miles. A fun outing with good snow conditions can easily turn into an eight or more hour ordeal with poor weather or bad snow. Low clouds and white-outs are common, which can make following the trail very difficult. Not everyone makes it to the hut as planned. We recommend starting out on the trail as early as possible. It is essential that survival equipment be taken. For your safety, it is advised that you review the "what to bring" checklist provided and be prepared for your trip. All equipment should be in excellent condition and all winter backcountry users should be familiar with proper avalanche techniques. Avalanche conditions exist at all times on the trail to Pear Lake. Users are ultimately responsible for assessing the dangers and determining if you should proceed on you trip or cancel it. Hut visitors travel to the hut and use the facility at their own risk. A refund will not be issued because of a winter storm.
Please review the cancellation policy if needed.

HANTAVIRUS
Regarding the potential for exposure to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) at Pear Lake Winter Hut: Mice are native rodents in the Sierra including the Pear Lake wilderness and Pear Lake Winter Hut. The Pear Lake Winter Hut will be cleaned according to Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines prior to opening for the season. The Sequoia Parks Conservancy will set traps and continue to use CDC cleaning procedures when rodents or rodent droppings are detected, however the Sequoia Parks Conservancy cannot guarantee that the hut is HPS-free. Hut users are advised of the risks, those wishing not to be exposed to the potential of HPS may choose to not register for the winter hut.

EARLY DEPARTURE*
*Emergency situations only. For your own safety it is not advised to depart from or arrive to the hut on any days that are not your designated ski-in or ski-out days. We are aware that unforeseen circumstances may require you to depart the Wolverton parking area before the road has been plowed. In this rare situation, you must use the guidelines that are provided to you when you complete your reservation.
By submitting a reservation form for the Pear Lake Winter Hut, you are acknowledging and agreeing to the terms of the liability waiver.
